REIF strengthens capacities in management, reuse and recycling of batteries used in electromobility

With the aim of advancing towards a sustainable management model for electric vehicle batteries, a technical workshop was held on the following topics "Towards a valorization of batteries: challenges and opportunities in the management of electric mobility batteries in Uruguay.". The activity was organized by the Renewable Energy Innovation Fund (REIF), together with the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), the Ministry of Environment (MA), and UTE.

This workshop is the first instance of a cycle of activities aimed at strengthening national capacities in the management, reuse and recycling of batteries used in electromobility, as well as promoting technological exchange with international references. The meeting was held on May 28 and 29 at UNDP headquarters and brought together representatives of public agencies, energy service companies, vehicle importers, waste management operators, universities and research centers. The purpose of the meeting was to explore in a comprehensive manner the opportunities, limitations and conditions necessary for an adequate management of the life cycle of batteries, with special emphasis on their second use and recovery within the framework of a circular economy strategy that promotes sustainability and technological innovation.

Four thematic modules were addressed during the conference:

  • National policy and regulatory frameworkThe following presentations were made: progress in the promotion of electric mobility, battery traceability and regulatory projections, with presentations by the MA, MIEM and UTE.

  • Importer/manufacturer's extended liabilityACAU, Sadar, Fiancar and CUTCSA participated in this event.

  • Research and technical trainingExhibition of lines of academic work oriented to the management and reuse of batteries, by UDELAR, UM and UTEC.

  • Recycling and recoveryAnalysis of local alternatives for the reuse and recycling of batteries, with presentations by Werba, NewLife and Alternativas Sustentables.

The activity took place within the framework of the REIF program, as part of its lines of action aimed at accompanying the second energy transition through regulatory strengthening, technical capacity building, knowledge development and technology transfer. This type of event allows the consolidation of a common base among strategic actors, which is key for the development of innovative and sustainable solutions in the field of electromobility.
