REIF as a case study in Uruguay's Fourth Annual Sustainable Bond Report
Uruguay released the Fourth Annual Report on the Climate Change Indicator-Indexed Sovereign Bond (BIICC), an instrument that links the country’s financing strategy to the achievement of its climate and nature conservation goals.
The report provides an update on Uruguay's progress regarding its performance indicators and presents various tools that help sustain that progress, including the REIF.
Through the REIF’s efforts to promote sustainability-linked private credit in Uruguay, the report highlights the role that innovative financing instruments can play as a complement to national policy in advancing the country’s climate goals.
REIF has already co-financed 17 private projects in the industrial, commercial, transportation, and residential sectors, providing USD 5.4 million in concessional financing and mobilizing a total investment of USD 30.3 million. These projects are expected to prevent the emission of 114,000 tCO₂
The report highlights REIF’s work in promoting financial instruments that link better financing terms to the achievement of verifiable sustainability goals, introducing this approach to companies and banks in the Uruguayan market.
