Experts from the Port of Rotterdam and Royal HaskoningDHV visited Uruguay to evaluate the port infrastructure to export Green Hydrogen derivatives.
The visit was part of a consultancy for the Renewable Energy Innovation Fund (REIF Uruguay) to evaluate port facilities.
REIF is a program supported by the Joint United Nations Fund for the SDGs. It aims to boost the decarbonization of industry and transport in Uruguay through an innovative financing instrument that catalyzes private sector investment in partnership with banks.
The objective of the study is to conduct a technical, economic, environmental and safety analysis of port logistics in the Port of Montevideo and surrounding areas, as well as in other ports in the country, to assess their suitability for the export of green hydrogen derivatives.
The Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) has stated that the world seeks to develop the green hydrogen economy to reduce global warming. Uruguay, already recognized worldwide for its 90% renewable electricity matrix, has a unique opportunity to continue leading the energy transformation by becoming a producer and exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives, such as synthetic fuels for ships and airplanes. The production of green hydrogen would imply the generation of local energy sources, the promotion of economic development and the creation of new related industries.
Accompanied by representatives of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM), the National Ports Administration (ANP), the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works (MTOP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the delegation visited public and private facilities in Montevideo, Paysandú, Río Negro and Colonia.
International consultations and the presence of experts in the country, supported by international cooperation projects such as REIF, provide valuable opportunities for Uruguay. At the end of this study, the country will have crucial information to guide its next steps in green hydrogen (H2V).
